Tragedy at Songkran: Woman Abandons Newborn After Giving Birth During Festival

Bangkok — A disturbing incident has come to light after CCTV footage revealed a young woman giving birth in a parking area during Thailand’s annual Songkran Festival, only to walk away from the newborn and return to partying.

The video, captured on April 14 in the Don Mueang district of Bangkok, shows 27-year-old Piyathida, reportedly in visible distress, squatting behind some potted plants near a parked car. Moments later, she leaves the scene, rejoining the water festivities just outside Rotsarin Village, seemingly unfazed.

Bystanders later discovered the infant, prompting attempts to revive the baby. Despite their efforts, the newborn could not be saved.

Witnesses claimed Piyathida was seen nearby, actively participating in the celebrations and splashing water with friends, while blood visibly stained her legs. When approached, she initially denied giving birth, but eventually admitted the truth and was taken to a hospital for treatment due to significant blood loss.

Police confirmed the area where the baby was left showed signs of childbirth, including blood on the walls and nearby plants. Investigators also revealed that Piyathida, believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time, is the mother of two other children, both now under the care of relatives from previous marriages.

Authorities have yet to formally question her due to her current medical condition, but Don Mueang Police Superintendent Phuwadon Aoonpho assured the public that she will face legal consequences once discharged.

A friend of Piyathida, 20-year-old Am, told local media she has cut ties with the woman, expressing shock and disbelief over her actions. Am said she had questioned Piyathida’s decision to attend the festival due to her noticeable physical condition, but was told the weight gain was unrelated to pregnancy.

The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow among the public, casting a dark shadow over what is typically a joyful time of national celebration.
