From a small Ohio town to one of Washington’s most secure addresses, Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha are raising three children in a world that’s anything but ordinary—yet doing everything they can to keep it grounded.
Inside the gates of the Naval Observatory, where the Vice President’s official residence sits behind layers of security, daily life for the Vance family still revolves around snack time, sibling rivalries, and bedtime routines.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Vice President Vance opened up about how he and Usha are navigating this new chapter—not just politically, but as parents.
“Our biggest goal is to keep life as normal as possible for the kids, even in this very abnormal situation,” Vance said. “We’re doing our best to create stability—and I think we’re getting there.”
Secret Service Hide-and-Seek
The couple’s three young children are adjusting to their new reality in different ways.
“Vivek thinks it’s great,” Vance shared. “He has a bunch of Secret Service agents to play with and he loves the freedom of going anywhere.”
“Ewan is more aware of everything going on. He’s adjusting, too,” he added. “And Mirabel? She has no clue what any of this means.”
Still, the youngest Vance might be the family’s most charming ambassador. A favorite photo from their first 100 days in Washington shows Mirabel in pajamas, studying a photo of an Indian military formation.
“It’s hilarious,” said Vance. “That might be my favorite picture we’ve taken so far.”
A Journey from Middletown to Washington
Before politics, Vance was best known for Hillbilly Elegy, the bestselling memoir chronicling his upbringing in working-class Ohio and his path through Yale Law School. Now, he’s living a very different kind of story—raising a family in the heart of the capital.
Life at the Vice President’s residence, he says, is surprisingly peaceful.
“It’s very private and not as overwhelming as you might think,” he said. “There aren’t cameras everywhere. It’s actually a very normal place for our kids to grow up.”
Though the family still owns their home in Cincinnati, their current day-to-day life is rooted in D.C.—complete with a solid school setup and the occasional White House playdate.
Usha Vance: A Modern Second Lady
There’s no official guidebook for the role of Second Lady, but Usha Vance is writing her own version—balancing a growing public presence with full-time parenting.
“She didn’t come into this with a rigid plan,” said JD Vance. “But she’s fully engaged. She’s really active with the Kennedy Center and passionate about the arts.”
With three small children and a historic address to call home, Usha sees this phase as a unique opportunity.
“She’s amazing,” Vance said. “She’s focused on giving the kids a sense of normal life, and she’s doing an incredible job.”
Real Life at the Vice President’s Home
There’s no shortage of surreal moments in the Vance household—from children attending military briefings in pajamas to making friends with federal agents. Still, at its core, their family life remains refreshingly familiar.
The Vances are showing that behind the political spotlight, family can still come first—even in Washington.
