Karoline Leavitt has sparked an internet frenzy after delivering a sharp comeback to Good Morning America host Michael Strahan — earning her a new nickname that’s quickly gone viral.
During a heated exchange on Wednesday, Strahan challenged Leavitt, asking whether forcing federal employees back into their D.C. offices might cause top talent like doctors and scientists to quit. Without skipping a beat, Leavitt replied, “Most doctors working in actual hospitals are already required to show up in person.”
The moment quickly exploded on social media, with fans hailing her performance. Some even dubbed her the “grim reaper” of mainstream news, referencing her growing reputation for shutting down high-profile media figures with poise and precision.
One viral post on X (formerly Twitter) read, “Karoline Leavitt just took another soul on live TV. She’s the grim reaper of fake news.” Another user chimed in: “Stone-cold killer. She’ll be a legend.” The clip of the exchange has already been viewed more than 3 million times.
Strahan, a former NFL star, may not have anticipated Leavitt’s quick-witted response. One commenter joked, “Karoline sacked Strahan,” nodding to his football background.
At just 27, Leavitt has become the youngest press secretary in U.S. history, instantly winning praise from both President Trump and his base. In her first White House briefing room appearance, she made headlines again by rearranging the seating chart to include influencers and nontraditional media outlets.
“You can apply for press credentials if you’re producing legitimate news — whether that’s on TikTok, a blog, or a podcast,” she said. In just hours, over 7,400 people signed up.
Outside of her public role, Leavitt enjoys family life with husband Nicholas Riccio and their baby son, Niko. She gave birth in July and celebrated the milestone online, writing, “My heart has grown bigger than I ever imagined possible.”
Despite having just had a child, Leavitt jumped into action shortly after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. “He risked his life to win this election,” she said in an interview. “The least I could do was get back to work right away.”
She’s known for her bold communication style, even calling out CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash for perceived bias. When her mic was cut by Kasie Hunt during a CNN segment, it only amplified her reputation for being unfiltered and fearless.
Yet, some commentators suggest her approach may need to evolve with her new official duties. As one supporter put it, “It’s harder when you have to show grace to people who wish you the worst. But she does it well.”
Leavitt also defended President Trump’s return-to-office executive order, citing improved productivity and accountability. “Only 6% of federal employees in D.C. are working in their offices full-time,” she noted. “Look at these beautiful buildings — millions are being wasted on empty office space.”
Under Trump’s directive, federal agencies are now required to draft return-to-work plans, with a buyout option offered to employees who opt to leave. Those who take it can remain on the payroll until September if they resign by February 6.
For Leavitt, her mission is clear: “This job is temporary,” she said, “but it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. And I know one day, my son will be proud of his mama.”
