Two years after the heartbreaking death of their 11-year-old son, Louis Johnson III (LJ), his parents have taken legal action, filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Marion County School Board in Florida.
The Johnsons allege that their son fell victim to relentless bullying by his fifth-grade teacher, who they claim was responsible for contributing to his tragic suicide. The lawsuit, filed on April 21, 2025, argues that the school failed to intervene, despite the parents raising concerns over the teacher’s behavior toward their son.
LJ tragically took his own life on April 27, 2023. According to the lawsuit, Tyka and Louis Johnson Jr. repeatedly informed the school about their son’s treatment by the teacher, identified as Donna White (though school records refer to her as Dawn). The parents claim White repeatedly humiliated LJ in front of his classmates, calling him “stupid” and mocking him over a period of several months.
Court documents reveal that the teacher allegedly encouraged other students to join in the ridicule, saying that LJ “didn’t know anything.” The family believes that this ongoing emotional abuse played a major role in their son’s growing anxiety and depression, ultimately leading to his death.
The Johnsons are seeking justice through a jury trial, asserting that the school board’s failure to act on their complaints amounted to negligence.
After their son’s death, the family distributed flyers at the school promoting suicide prevention, prompting an internal investigation into White’s conduct. The investigation revealed that 24 students, including 12 from White’s own classroom, reported that she frequently belittled students, publicly criticized their grades, and even reduced some to tears. As a result, White’s contract was not renewed.
The Johnsons also set up a GoFundMe page in memory of LJ, sharing details about the emotional toll the bullying took on him and celebrating his life. In their tribute, the family described their son as the youngest of four, full of potential and love for life. LJ loved the beach, catching crabs, making TikTok recipes, and was deeply compassionate, often advocating for homeless people.
“LJ had an infectious smile that could light up any room,” his family shared. “He was a much-loved son, brother, uncle, and friend, and we want to give him the voice he deserves.”
The family has also used the page to raise awareness about the impact of adult bullying on children and the tragic consequences it can have. They are now asking for financial support to help cover ongoing expenses as they continue their fight for justice in LJ’s name.
